Man Caught With Machete At Danbury Elementary School, Police Say

A Fairfield County man was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon after he allegedly jumped a fence at an elementary school carrying a machete.

The incident occurred in Danbury on Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Ellsworth Avenue School, at 53 Ellsworth Ave. 

According to Erin Henry with the Danbury Police, officers responded to the school for a report of a person trespassing on school property with a machete.

A witness told police that a man and woman were seen in the alleyway of the school attempting to jump a fence leading to the playground, Henry said.

Henry said before climbing the fence, the witness said the man removed a machete from his pants and handed it to the woman.

The school's Safety Advocate confronted the man, and both left the area.

Later, the man, identified as Derek Sotelo, age 20, of Danbury, was taken into custody and charged with:

  • Carrying a dangerous weapon second degree 
  • Trespass second degree
  • Breach of peace. 

Sotelo is being held on a $10,000 bond. 

Police did not divulge what happened to the woman.
